🎭 The 3 Sins of Vocal Training
Habits That Disconnect Your Diaphragm
If you're working hard but still not singing freely, there’s a good chance you’re unknowingly committing one (or more) of these “vocal sins.” They sound innocent — even logical — but each one cuts off your power at the source.
🚫 The 3 Vocal Training Sins
1. Singing softly
Quiet singing might feel “safe,” but it disengages breath support. It shrinks the vocal folds, limits resonance, and disconnects the diaphragm from contributing fully.
2. Singing breathily
Airiness is often mistaken for a “gentle” or emotional tone. But breathy singing wastes airflow and encourages poor cord closure, tiring your voice and stressing the larynx.
3. Holding back
Whether physical or emotional, hesitation causes tension. When you don’t sing with conviction, the muscles compensate — especially the neck, jaw, and tongue — which disrupts vocal balance.
🔄 What Connects All Three?
They all have one thing in common:
They shut the diaphragm out of the conversation.
Instead of letting your breath and body do the work, these habits force your larynx — a small, delicate structure — to take over. That’s the opposite of what nature (and healthy technique) intended.
💡 What to Do Instead
Sing with full tone, even during warmups
Aim for clarity, not airiness
Practice with energy, not hesitation
Learn how to activate your support system
And most of all: Train with curiosity, not fear
